Chesapeake Man Committed to State Facility After Wife’s 48-Hour Business Trip

Authorities say the man’s decline began almost immediately after his wife left town, despite leaving behind what she described as an “extremely manageable” list of household responsibilities.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A local man is under observation at a state mental health facility after what authorities are calling “a rapid and concerning decline” that began shortly after his wife left town for a two-day business conference.

The man, whose name was withheld pending his continued evaluation, had been left with what friends described as a modest list of household responsibilities: water the garden if temperatures climbed above 85 degrees and move one load of laundry from the washer to the dryer. His wife had also ordered him a pizza for the first night so he would not have to cook.

He completed none of those tasks.

Instead, according to people familiar with the incident, the man opened a bottle of whiskey he had not touched since college, finished most of it by 9 p.m. and later turned up at a dimly lit basement gathering on the edge of the city calling itself “The Circle of Mother.”

Witnesses said the gathering involved an initiation-like ceremony in which participants applied goat’s blood. The man reportedly took part enthusiastically, later telling others that the experience made him feel “free, welcome, and finally open to Mother.”

He left the basement smiling.

The following morning, the man awoke on his living-room floor with a severe hangover and only fragmented memories of the previous night. According to first responders, he almost immediately expressed a desire to return to the gathering.

At roughly the same time, however, thoughts of his wife and the responsibilities he had left undone began to surface. The man later told authorities that “the powers of the dimly lit temple were calling my name,” and that the pull felt stronger than the prospect of returning home.

In what he later described as his “last few straws of reality,” he called 911.

Police arrived to find the man still wearing traces of the ceremonial blood and repeatedly muttering about “Mother.” He was transported for evaluation and remains under observation.

His wife returned home the following afternoon to find a dry garden, a still-damp load of laundry, an empty pizza box and a police report.

Friends said she stood in the doorway for several seconds before speaking.

“I knew he probably wouldn’t move the laundry,” she told a neighbor. “I even told myself not to be surprised if the garden looked thirsty. But I did not have ‘joins blood cult and calls 911 because the basement is talking to him’ on the bingo card.”

She has since watered the garden, finished the laundry and visited her husband at the facility. People close to the couple described her demeanor during the visit as a mixture of genuine concern and the quiet, exhausted disappointment of someone who left for 48 hours and returned to a fundamentally altered marriage.

Hospital staff said the man is no longer reporting voices from the basement. He has, however, repeatedly asked whether the pizza place delivers to the facility.

His wife has not yet answered that question.
