Russian Influence on the Midterms Has Been Spotted by Every Agency, Every Platform and a Retired Dentist in Duluth. Kash Patel’s Eyes Were Open the Entire Time.
The Director of the FBI sat through a ninety-four-slide briefing on a Russian operation that the Russians have stopped bothering to hide. Sources say he asked whether the laser pointer was a mind-control device, whether the map could be made less red, and whether there was any news on the laptop.

WASHINGTON — In a development that has surprised no one who has owned a television since 2016, a Russian influence operation targeting November’s midterm elections has now been detected by every intelligence service in the Western alliance, three separate technology companies, the largest social platform on earth, a retired dentist in Duluth, a fourteen-year-old in Dayton, and — as of last Friday, when one of its own accounts began signing its posts with a military unit number — the operation itself.
It has not been detected by the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Kash Patel, whose agency is the lead federal authority for counterintelligence inside the United States, and who was, according to four people present, looking directly at it.
“His eyes were open,” said one official. “I want to be very clear about that. That’s the part that keeps me up. His eyes were open the entire time. Wider than mine. Wider than anyone’s. It went in. Nothing came back out.”
I. The Briefing
The briefing ran ninety-four slides and two hours and ten minutes, and was delivered, according to people present, by three analysts in rotation, “so that none of us had to do more than forty minutes of it.”
It covered the operation’s structure, its funding, its targeting of battleground districts, its eighteen-month build-up of dormant accounts, and its central aim, which one analyst summarised in a single line on slide six for the purpose of, in her words, “having one slide he could not get past.”
“We told him the Russians were trying to amplify division, flood the zone with fabricated stories and boost certain candidates. Kash nodded. He took a long sip of whatever was in the mug. He said, ‘Sounds like something the Democrats would do.’ Then he asked if we had any updates on the Hunter Biden laptop.”— Senior intelligence official, present
On slide eleven, an analyst used a laser pointer to indicate the flow of funds from a Moscow-registered consultancy to a network of accounts posing as veterans in Wisconsin. The Director, sources say, stopped the briefing to ask whether the laser pointer was “a Deep State mind-control device.” He was told it was a laser pointer. He asked who had issued it. He was told Staples. He asked that it be logged.
It has been logged. Reality Daily has seen the evidence receipt. The laser pointer is currently in a secure locker at headquarters, in a bag, under a case number, which makes it, by a comfortable margin, the most thoroughly investigated object connected to the midterm elections.
On slide thirty, the analysts displayed a map of targeted districts. The Director asked whether the map could be “made less red.” He was told the red was the data. He asked whether the data could be made less red. A revised map, in teal, was circulated the next morning, and is the version now on file.
II. Who Noticed
The list of parties that have independently detected the operation is long and, for the Bureau, uncomfortable. It includes the threat-intelligence units of three American technology companies; the trust-and-safety team of the largest social network, which removed 1,140 accounts in one afternoon and described the task as “honestly relaxing”; the security services of eleven allied governments; and several private researchers who noticed that an unusual number of self-described Wisconsin dairy farmers post exclusively between nine in the morning and six in the evening, Moscow time, with a lunch break.
It also includes Dr. Harold Vennegaard, 71, a retired dentist in Duluth, Minnesota, who told this newspaper he spotted the network in March.
“They all kept calling me ‘fellow patriot.’ Nobody in Minnesota calls anybody ‘fellow patriot.’ We say ‘hey there.’ I wrote to the FBI tip line in March, in April, and in June. In July I got a form letter thanking me for my interest in careers at the Bureau.”— Dr. H. Vennegaard, Duluth
It includes Priya Oduya-Fenwick, 14, of Dayton, Ohio, who mapped 312 of the accounts for an eighth-grade civics project and received a B-plus. Her teacher deducted marks for “insufficient sourcing.” She has since been contacted by two foreign intelligence services and one American technology company. She has not been contacted by the FBI.
It does not include the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, which was set up in 2017 to detect precisely this kind of operation, and which was disbanded in February 2025. Asked who inside the Bureau now does its job, a spokesperson said the question had been “referred.” Asked to whom, she said, “Internally.” Asked to whom internally, she said the call was breaking up. It was not.
III. The Eyes
Every person present at the briefing volunteered, unprompted, a description of the Director’s eyes.
When he was shown concrete examples of coordinated inauthentic behaviour — side-by-side screenshots of forty accounts posting the same sentence, with the same typo, within the same ninety seconds — his eyes, witnesses say, grew wider still, a feat previously considered outside the tolerances of the human face.

The Bureau’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, which for five decades has profiled serial killers, kidnappers and spree shooters, was later asked by a senior official — informally, and, the official stresses, “as a joke, at first” — to profile the Director’s face during the briefing from the room’s security footage.
Its one-page finding, which Reality Daily has seen, describes the subject’s expression as “surprise: acute, persistent, non-specific” and concludes: “Subject appears to be seeing everything and registering nothing. We have encountered this presentation before, but only in witnesses to a traumatic event, and only for a few seconds.”
The finding has been placed in the same locker as the laser pointer.
IV. The Server Logs
Pressed at the end of the briefing on whether he accepted its conclusions, the Director, sources say, replied that he had “checked the server logs personally.”
Asked which server logs, he said, “All of them.” Asked when, he said the previous evening, on his phone, during the commercial break of a fourteen-minute cable news appearance. Asked what he had found, he said, “Nothing,” and that this was “the point.”
An official with direct knowledge of the Bureau’s systems said the only server logs accessible from the Director’s phone are the Director’s phone’s.
“So technically he’s right. He checked. There’s no Russian influence operation on his phone. There’s a lot of other stuff on his phone. But not that.”— Official with knowledge of Bureau systems
V. What the Bureau Is Doing Instead
The Director has not commented on the record. People close to him insist that he remains “laser-focused” — a phrase that, since the evidence receipt, several staff have asked colleagues not to use in his presence — on what they describe as the real threats facing American democracy.
Pressed to name them, the same people named, in order: leaks; anyone who has ever investigated the Director; and “people who disagree with him on television, which is a lot of people, and they’re on a lot.”
Reality Daily has compared staffing figures supplied by two current and one former Bureau official. As of this week, the Bureau has more agents assigned to finding out who told this newspaper about the laser pointer than it has assigned to the operation the laser pointer was pointing at.
Two of the officials who spoke to us on Tuesday were, by Thursday, no longer employed by the Bureau. One was told it was a restructuring. The other was told nothing, and found out when her badge stopped opening the door. She has asked us to note that the door, at least, noticed something.
VI. Moscow
The Kremlin, which does not ordinarily comment on the internal affairs of American law enforcement, issued a brief statement on Wednesday afternoon thanking the Director by name “for his continued vigilance against noticing things.”
The statement was posted in English and Russian. It was then amplified, within four minutes, by roughly nine thousand accounts claiming to be American veterans, dairy farmers and suburban mothers, which, the Duluth dentist points out, “is sort of the whole thing, right there, in one go.”
Researchers monitoring the operation’s internal channels report that a close-cropped photograph of the Director’s face — eyes fully open, mid-realisation — now serves inside the network as a reaction image meaning, roughly, all clear, proceed. It has been posted 41,000 times since June. Its use peaks, researchers say, on the days he appears on television.
“They have a sense of humour,” one researcher said. “I didn’t know that. I have been watching them for nine years. It is the first joke I have seen them make. It is him.”
VII. The Shrug
The midterms are forty days away. The operation is, by every outside measure, the largest yet. It no longer hides its accounts, its funding or, as of last Friday, its unit number. Everyone who has looked at it has seen it. Everyone who has seen it has said so.
The man responsible for stopping it has looked directly at it for two hours and ten minutes with his eyes as open as eyes go, and has seen a laser pointer, a map that was too red, and a laptop that is not in the room.
Reality Daily asked the FBI press office for comment. It replied within forty minutes with a statement confirming that the Director is “laser-focused on the threats that matter.” A second message followed eleven minutes later, unsolicited, asking what we had meant by “laser.”
We will continue to monitor the situation. At this point it does not appear that anybody else is going to.

Duluth dentist here. Still waiting to hear back on the careers thing. At this point I think I’d be a strong hire.
I spent twelve years on foreign influence. We used to find these networks with a spreadsheet and a pot of coffee. The spreadsheet is still there. Nobody opens it. I think someone logged the coffee.
I stand by the B-plus. Her citations were a mess. I will say she did better than the federal government, and I have now said that to her mother, who has asked me to put it in writing.
